Having cleared out the attic and turned it into a workspace last January I promptly lost it to Mr Kat. Save for a few hours at the weekend I’ve been working from the sofa and as comfy as that is it wasn’t practical with a family.
I hatched a plan to claim a corner of our bedroom as my own but with very little space already it had to be seriously small.
The main issue was fitting in a desk which wouldn’t take up so much space we couldn’t walk past the bed. I was pondering a space-saving Ikea desk when I saw this old formica table in a local junk shop. Not only was it the perfect width but with folding leaves it can be made smaller when not in use. Don’t you just love the pattern on the top?
I have taped some prints to the wall while I decide how to hang them and I’ve positioned them so they define my corner as a separate space which I really like. I’m going to have to create some storage on the wall but in a way that won’t be endlessly tempting to little hands.
I could run wild with ides for decorating this space but size is forcing me to keep it simple.
It may be just one square metre but I’m loving this little corner of my own.

I love it! It’s full of colour and would definitely inspire me if I was working there. My problem is I’d need a screen so I wouldn’t see the mess in my bedroom – not that I’m for one second suggesting your bedroom is messy ;)
Looks great. The house we are buying has a little inner hall way between the living room and kitchen which I am going to squeeze a desk in. Can’t wait to have a work space

It’s a sweet little space just ready to inspire you and much better than the sofa for defining work from family.
what a great find that table! love the chair as well! I have done something similar over the past few weeks trying to fit the whole shop and stockroom into every nook and cranny of our already pretty crammed house…it’s a challenge, and seeing your photos made me confident again that it can be done and still look good! Thanks Kat! X
Just love your cosy corner. I think the pictures should stay as they are, frames mean you’re less likely to change your surroundings with new inspiration. I’ve just cured myself of the ‘working-in-the-living-room-itous’ which seems to be particularly contagious amongst mothers. With a new (second hand) desk and a view to get lost in whilst inspiration comes. I’d have hoped it would have made me work more but in actual fact I’m now browsing for delicious stationary!
Love the flowers too. Amazing what the significance of a metre square can be. xx
always love to read your blog.
That table is perfect. I want it.
I keep trying to carve out a place just for me but all I have is right in the middle of the living room and it isn’t any good for concentrating at all, unless I am the only person in the house.
Well done for claiming your space, and I love the washi taped pictures. I wish to copy that immediately.
