On Thursday I dragged my children from their late afternoon slumbers, hastily bundled them up against the cold and rushed them into town for the Lantern Parade which signals the official opening of Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market. We arrived with seconds to spare before the billed 6pm start and then waited for a further half an hour in the bitter cold for it to get going. Despite the long wait we were not disappointed and another magnificent display of handmade lanterns was our reward. I was so absorbed in taking photos of the lanterns that I neglected to take any of my children (imagine half frozen looks of wonderment).
I can’t think of a better pre-festive activity and I think I could be tempted to head over to Salisbury for their lantern parade next month…

That’s very cool! Edinburgh could do with more things like this…
Lovely to see the photos – the lanterns look fabulous! Winchester is great for its parades.
That’s fabulous, and how beautiful are all those lanterns? Just stunning.
